Perfect to drink now, or to cellar, Montalto wines are to savour.
A lace-like thread of bright red fruit flavours, notably strawberry and red cherry sherbert combine with some apple and rhubarb notes and a whiff of talc. The palate is creamy and effortless along a gentle bead of froth and bright crunchy acidity.
A highly fragrant wine reminiscent of perfumed talc, musk sticks, apple blossom, Nashi pear, lemon sherbet with some mineral and nettle complexity. The palate is rich, expressive, yet supple, and beautifully textured with classic Gris oiliness balanced by bright natural acidity and spicy warmth.
Lemon curd, white peach, nectarine and grapefruit meld with subtle Turkish Delight, white florals and cinnamon. There are some gentle oak aromas by the way of brioche and roast hazelnuts just to round out the package.
A classically vibrant and moreish Pennon Hill Pinot Noir. Lively aromas of cherry liqueur, milk chocolate, orange blossom and sage suggest a wine that’s both eminently drinkable yet complex. On the palate there’s bucket loads of red fruits in the form of ripe red cherry plus chinotto and classic Mornington Campari. Fresh acidity across the mid palate enhances the sense of life and vibrancy before an array of spice and structural tannin take over for a long savoury finish.
Slate and flint, lemon curd, crème brulee, lime splice, roasted hazelnuts, white florals, a lick of sulphides all chime in to play their part. The influence of spicy French oak compliments the generous fruit profile which is tied together with bright and energetic naturally acidity and a textural, creamy finish.
Classically red-fruited, raspberry, cherry, and cranberry combine with blood orange, rose petal, spice, earth, pink peppercorn, fresh herbs, forest floor, and some oak-inspired co ee grind notes, making for a wonderfully aromatic and complex aroma profile. A core of quenching juicy red fruit gives way to a savoury line showing just a subtle character of cured meat or charcuterie. There’s minerality in this wine too and a fine polished tannin, which carries the length of the palate. Moreish acidity gives purpose, brightness, and a long expressive finish.
A highly aromatic and expressive nose of Turkish delight, lychee, musk and rosewater. On the palate the wine is generous and juicy with classic Pinot Gris fruits of baked pear and apple combining with a savory chicken stock character. A Gris of generosity, flesh and structure.
Pale straw with green hues. A core citrus fruit melds with a fusion of ginger, oatmeal, white floral, mandarin blossom, oak spice and oyster shell. On the palate, tight lemony acidity and quenching white nectarine fruit are balanced with creamy and textural flavours of nougat and crème brûlée. Wet river stone, and a dash of savoury chicken stock make for an alluring classic Chardonnay.
Quartz colour with green hues. A core of white peach and honeydew fruit with lemon butter, savoury chicken stock and a curious note of Fruit Tingles. This is a wine of breadth, weight and generosity. It feels glossy and polished with juicy white peach fruit yet lively with zippy lemon acidity. There’s a slate-like mineral feel and chewy mid-palate structure.
A classic example Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir. Quintessential red fruits including wild strawberry, cranberry, pomegranate, raspberry, and cherry all tied together with some crushed fresh herbs, liquorice, rose petal and negroni. On the palate, the red fruit theme continues, with sour cherry, red currant, raspberry. The depth of fruit and powder-fine tannins are ingrained in the layered and savoury finish.
The Merricks Pinot Noir boasts a rich ruby red colour and purple hues. It opens with sweet mulberry fruit, maraschino cherry and Black Forest cake with some blood orange and blood plum fruit in support. The incorporation of whole bunch tempers the juiciness, creating a savoury line that compliments the plush structural tannins.
The charm of the Tuerong Pinot Noir begins with its complex nose. A plethora of aromas including bramble, Ink, cola, sarsaparilla, beets, parsnips, charcuterie, earth and a waft of cinnamon stick. On the palate, polished supple mulberry and blackberry fruits combine with spice, earthiness and mouth-coating chalky tannins on a long savoury finish. It’s a wine that invites you to revisit it again and again to contemplate its evolution over time.
Simon joined Montalto as Chief Winemaker in 2009 after playing an integral role in the successful set-up of a number of wineries across Victoria. Drawn to both the Peninsula, and specifically Montalto, for the promised potential of cool climate, maritime vineyards, Simon found both freedom of creativity and expression working alongside John Mitchell who famously said to Simon upon his arrival ‘Just go and do it, I’ll let you know if there’s a problem.’ "Being allowed full control, I’ve been able to build up a complete picture in my head with all of our sites contributing to the master plan.” Simon’s master plan has resulted in countless incredibly impressive awards, trophies and highlights over the years - most recently being awarded the 2021 James Halliday Australian Chardonnay Trophy Winner as the highest pointed Chardonnay for his 2019 Montalto Single Vineyard “Tuerong Block” Chardonnay.
